This research answers one simple question: when a buyer asks AI about a business like yours in Bali, who gets named, and why? We chose two fields where decisions are expensive and buyers research first: beauty clinics and schools.

The five findings below are written for business owners, not technical specialists. The full method, limitations, and source data are at the end of the page, so you can judge for yourself how strong the conclusions are.

Disclosure: Kontento AI sells GEO services. This research is also part of our marketing, which is why we publish the method, limitations, and data as fully as we can.

1. AI cites directories more often than the businesses' own sites

Across 10 questions about beauty clinics, one Bali clinic directory was cited in 6 answers. No clinic website was cited that often.

Source types cited by AI · clinic questions · 10 answers
  • Bali clinic directorydirectory6/10
  • Global directory and bookingdirectory3-4/10
  • Venue and travel guidesthird-party content3/10
  • Lifestyle mediamedia3/10
  • A clinic chain's own blogbusiness's own site3/10
  • Local media and health platformsmedia1-2/10

AI may work like a journalist on a deadline: it trusts one source that already summarises many clinics more than opening clinic websites one by one.

What it means for your business: a good website isn't enough. Your business also needs to be listed correctly in the directories and media AI actually reads for your field.

2. Most businesses are named only once

Of the 84 clinics, schools, and campuses AI named, 59 appeared in only one answer. For the other 21 questions, their names did not appear.

84 businesses named by AI
named 2 or more times (25)named only once (59)

What it means for your business: being named once doesn't mean you're safe. A buyer who phrases the question a little differently may never hear your name.

3. One name is named most often

Across 12 school questions, one national-plus school was named in 8 answers, in both Indonesian and English. For clinics, one clinic chain was named in 6 of 10 answers. The next ones were named 5 times for schools and 4 times for clinics.

How often each school was named · 12 answers
  • School #18
  • School #25
  • School #35
  • School #44
  • School #54
  • School #64
  • #7 and #83
  • #9 to #152
#7 and #8 named 3 times each, #9 to #15 twice each. The other 35 schools and campuses: once each. Total 50.

The most-named clinic has several branches and a separate page for each treatment at each location. This is a single example, not enough to conclude it's the cause.

What it means for your business: below the top name, mentions drop off fast. Of the 50 schools and campuses named, 35 appeared only once.

4. The question's language and location change the results

English and Indonesian questions produced different lists of names and sources.

Asked in English
  • Clinics named: in tourist areas like Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu, Ubud
  • Sources: travel blogs, lifestyle media, property agents, international directories
Asked in Indonesian
  • Clinics named: mostly in Denpasar
  • Sources: detik, Suara, IDN Times Bali, Radar Bali, health platforms, local directories

Note: our English questions also mentioned tourist areas more often, while the Indonesian ones mentioned Denpasar. So the effect of language and location can't be separated in this edition.

What it means for your business: in this edition, English and Indonesian questions drew on different sources. If your buyers are a mix of locals and expats, check both.

5. Old data and missing names

In one answer about private senior high schools, AI recommended schools based on 2022 exam results. In an answer about national-plus schools, AI only mentioned a Cambridge school in Pemogan and another in Kerobokan, without their names (paraphrased from our notes; the original answer text wasn't saved).

We can't be sure why. Our guess is that newer data and the schools' names aren't clearly written in the sources AI reads.

What it means for your business: the facts buyers ask about most, like fees, schedules, and requirements, need to be written clearly and kept current, so AI doesn't have to guess or fall back on old data.

What it means for business owners

Three things you can do this week, at no cost:

  1. Ask Perplexity or ChatGPT one question your buyers usually type. Note who gets named and which sources are listed.
  2. Check your Google Maps and Bing Maps profiles. Make sure the name, address, and number match your website exactly. This is outside the scope of this study, but it's a basic source many AI engines read.
  3. Write answers to the three questions that most often land in your WhatsApp, on an easy-to-find page of your website.

The full order of work is in the CITED method.

How this research was made

We wrote 22 questions that mimic how buyers ask, and put each one once to Perplexity via the Sonar API on 20 October 2026. We did not record the model version or the request location. For every answer we recorded two things:

  • Named: the business name appears in the answer text.
  • Cited: a site appears in the list of sources shown under the answer.

A business or source counts once per answer, even if mentioned several times in the same answer.

Questions tested22

Beauty clinics (10): 5 in English in a tourist or expat style, 5 in Indonesian in a local style. For example "safe botox clinic for tourists in Seminyak" and "beauty clinic with a dermatologist in Denpasar".

Schools and campuses (12): 5 in English, 7 in Indonesian. Topics: best international schools for expats, affordable international schools in Canggu and Denpasar, expat preschools in Canggu and Sanur, IB and Cambridge schools, universities with English programmes, best national-plus schools in Denpasar, bilingual kindergartens in Denpasar and Badung, Cambridge primary schools and their fees, best private senior high schools, Islamic and Christian schools in Denpasar, private universities for business and tourism, and comparing national-plus and international fees.

Limitations you should know

  • One AI engine. This edition tested only Perplexity. ChatGPT and Gemini may give different results, and we will test them in the next edition.
  • One run per question. AI answers can change even for the same question. These numbers are a one-day snapshot, not a fixed ranking.
  • A small sample. 22 questions are enough to see patterns, not to measure a market. Read them as a direction.
  • Questions written by us, mimicking how buyers ask, not taken from real search data.
  • The exact clinic question wording and the original answer texts weren't kept in our notes. What we kept is a per-answer record of who was named and which sources were cited.
  • Not yet a scored index. We use the name "Index" for this research series. Edition 01 is a simple count, not a composite score.

We don't name the clinics, schools, or campuses AI recommended, because this research isn't a ranking or an advertisement for anyone. We do name the source domains, because anyone can check those.
